Long Live the Posse Cut (LYS16 – NTNFMCS)

You might have caught your favorite rappers fondly recall his formative years, and linger over about battles and cyphers on corner blocks or high school lunch rooms. Heck, if you’re like me, you may have some of your own stories as well. There’s an unmistakable effervescence to these kind of gatherings. On rare occasions, that energy can be recreated in the studio. At their core, that’s what posse cuts are all about. From hip-hop’s heyday, having four wordsmiths or more on the same track was a popular resort for chiefly commercial reasons. Today, the posse cut is fast becoming an artifact. Here, I dig back to some of my favorite posse cuts and hope you get the same energy boost that’s put me in a exuberant form. And, that is in spite of the sad news of DMX’s passing, a unforgettable hip-hop giant who’s lit up many a posse cut! May he rest in power!

I wrote as kid. (I'd die if you'd ever get your hands on those poems.) And I wrote as a teen. (We thought our raps would spearhead revolution.) I write these days to share my joys and perspectives. I am as subjective as they come. I found a bunch of blessed souls that are just as expressive. And Africa is all the better for it. (I think I never really changed.)
