Long Live the King: Michael Jackson, A Musical Birthday Tribute Presented by DJ Jaycee

A Birthday Tribute Mix to King Michael Jackson

I’ve already touched on DJ Jaycee’s credential earlier this month, so there’s no need to delve into how much of a standout mix this is. Suffice it to say that when you’re able to deftly weave in Afrika Bambaata, Boogie Down Productions, OutKast, Ying Yang Twins and some furious cuts and scratches along with some of the King of Pop’s timeless music, your status as a master of the turntables cannot be questioned. On to Michael Jackson, the birthday boy then…

He would have been celebrating his sixtieth today. His influence on the current pop music is still as strong as it was before his passing. And it’s mixes like this that will keep his memory alive and also introduce the kids to his great body of work. Madonna alludes as much in the closing moment of this mix.

Excerpts of her 2009 Video Music Awards opening speech are used for the intro and outro of this mix. It clearly puts forth what we should remember about Michael:

“There is no question that Michael Jackson is one of the greatest talents the world has ever known. […] Girls fell in love with him, boys fell in love with him, everyone wanted to dance like him. He seemed otherworldly — but he was a human being. Yes, Michael Jackson was a human being, but dammit, he was a king! Long! Live! The KING!”

I wrote as kid. (I'd die if you'd ever get your hands on those poems.) And I wrote as a teen. (We thought our raps would spearhead revolution.) I write these days to share my joys and perspectives. I am as subjective as they come. I found a bunch of blessed souls that are just as expressive. And Africa is all the better for it. (I think I never really changed.)
