Roll and Coasters: Pa Olvidarte

I’ll admit that I’m quite fond of popular music in Spanish. (And understanding the language does help a lot.) Allow me to explain how we got here… Let’s go before the explosion of “Despacito” and the current heavy airplay latin America stars currently enjoy. We’re in the early aughts before reggaeton and bachata became global fare. I had a funky Colombian friend (and former college dorm roomate) who put me on to vallenato and Carlos Vive in particular. It’s been a gift that has kept on giving.

I happened on ChocQuibTown, a Colombian hip-hop group, a couple of years ago and I’m elated to see them growing in popularity. “Pa Olvidarte” follows yet another excellent album (Sin Miedo) and presages greater heights for the trio in 2019. It leads a playlist that is all Spanish bangers with small exceptions: there are a couple of Moroccans, a Senegalese-American and rap powerhouse Cardi B.
